Love is a word that has many meanings. The expression that exists between a mother and child is love and the feelings two close friends have for each other is love. However, the one form of love that is loved by many people is the concept of romantic love that exists between a pair of people, in love with each other.
What better day and significance is there for romantic love than Valentine’s Day. It is on this day that couples exchange cards, chocolate candy, flowers and presents to signify their romantic love for each other. Symbols like hearts, arrows, red roses, cupids and colors of red and pink are all used to signify the romantic love between a couple.
It is on the 14th of February that birds start mating and this is why till date, this has been considered to be the day of the celebration of romantic love. It was as early as in the Greek mythology that romantic love has been considered to be worthy enough for February 14th to be declared a holiday. This is because this is the day the Greek gods Zeus and Hera had married each other. And following this couple comes the festival of Faunus or Lupercalia which falls on February 14th, which is celebrated with significance to the God of fertility of ancient Rome.
There are also a few Christian saints of romantic love like Valentine to whom this day has been attributed as the day of romantic love. Of the many saints who were martyred, the reason Valentine’s Day got its name was for the saint who had performed silver weddings despite Emperor Claudius II’s ban from Roman soldiers from marriage.
It was in the Renaissance period that romantic love reached a high where the oldest valentine recorded is a poem of 1415 written by the duke of Orleans to his wife, while in prison. You can examine this letter to date, in the manuscript collection of the British Library of London. With this, started the fashion of sending of letters, love poems and cards to lovers to express romantic love.
In the 1800s, books of romantic poetry were specially published for Valentine’s Day where young men would choose poetry of romantic love to give their sweethearts. In fact, the valentines United States used to send to their valentines were imported from Europe. This was until 1914 when American publishers started printing their own wordings of romantic love for valentines.
The concept of expression of romantic love on valentines’ day has continued, and exists today. In fact, in the last two decades, romantic love and Valentine’s Day have also grown strong in conservative countries like India and china because of the sudden economic boom in the country and the acceptance of the concept of showing romantic love to their dates and partners. Romantic love has been around since the start of mankind and is slated to remain in the air for quite some more time to come.
