How to Resolve Conflict With Your Parents |
Resolving conflict with parents isn't easy, but you can do much to stop it before it gets out of hand.
1) Much of your parents' ire might stem from their perception that you're disregarding their opinion. Show them that you respect it, and that you do listen. Let them have their say before lashing out with something hurtful and abrasive. Assure them that you do see their point of view.
2) Tell them how you feel without getting emotional or angry. Walk away quietly from a heated situation and sit by yourself till you're calm enough to talk. Tell them you're sorry for making them upset or angry, and then calmly explain your opinion.
3) Be rational. Parents in cultures like ours tend not to trust emotional decisions, so make sure you have some solid reasons to support your arguments. If not, at least tell them they can trust you not to do anything rash, and ask them for some time before you discuss the issue again.
