Discretion in a Relationship |
When two people decide to enter into a relationship, the first decision they have to make is how public their relationship is going to be. Naturally, not everyone is comfortable about disclosing the private aspects of their life to everybody. However, there are also people who prefer being vocal and open about what is going on in their life.
All people can, in general, be classified into one of the two categories: People who believe relationships are better kept secret, and those who want to tell the world who they are with and how happy they are…
One might tend to view a partner who wishes to keep a relationship a secret a trifle suspiciously. It could make his/her intentions and sincerity seem questionable. Also, there might arise a question of whether the other is ashamed of admitting publicly that they are involved with you.
However, in some cases, maintaining a discreet stance about your relationship is a better idea. One of these situations is when two people from a common group of friends enter into a relationship. Though it might be difficult to keep such a thing hidden then, but disclosure may make the couple the object of much teasing and mockery. In such a case, a budding relationship may not be able to survive the innocent jibes of well-meaning friends.
Another situation which demands a certain level of discretion is when the two people are not sure whether or not their relationship will work. They might first wish to see how well they do together, a kind of trial period before they let others know that they are a couple. This decision is a wise one as breaking up soon after disclosing that one was involved with someone might create a wrong impression on others.
Unless you are a renowned actor or a celebrity of some sort, there aren’t many reasons behind maintaining a stony silence about your relationship.
Though a discreet relationship may help in some cases, one should thoroughly weigh the odds and make sure that they are comfortable with keeping their relationship under wraps before agreeing to their partner’s decision to do so. Agreeing unwillingly may create problems in future as one might start distrusting their partner. You should also discuss the issue and clarify the reasons why your partner is apprehensive about going public about the relationship.
If, unfortunately, you and your partner disagree on the idea of keeping your relationship private, talk it over. If you are uncomfortable about all the secrecy, tell your partner the reason for your uneasiness. Also, try to make them understand that even if it comes to the worst and people start talking about you, it will be a temporary topic of gossip. Nobody remains in the limelight forever, not even movie stars!
