Defining Monogamy

Love Lectures :: Marriage

In this modern world, not many people practice, or understand the meaning of monogamy. Monogamy is basically a term meant to signify marriage with a single person at a time. It is also considered to be the practice of having only one mate in the married life where the parson marries only once in life, and has no second partner.

These are the basic and real definitions to monogamy. However, these definitions have changed with social changes where monogamy is today considered the practice of having a single mate for life, but keeping multiple mates for sexual gratification. This means that many people today tend to have a single mate as a lifelong companion, but have sex with other people for their sexual gratification.

In the modern world, monogamy has taken a different meaning where it is often referred to as managed monogamy where there is not only a long term marriage with a single spouse, but where both spouses maintain mutual, extra marital sexual encounters. These new age couples define their extra marital affairs to be a part of managed monogamy where both spouses approve of each other’s external romantic and sexual encounters.

However, on the other hand, biologists today consider monogamy to be of three kinds; social monogamy, sexual monogamy and genetic monogamy. In the case of social monogamy, two people live with each other, have sex together and share basic resources like food, clothes and money. Sexual monogamy is a case where two people are sexually exclusive with each other and have no other sex partners. And in the case of genetic monogamy, two partners only produce offsprings with each other where the offsprings raised by the pair are related to each partner genetically. It is only on understanding the difference between these types of monogamy that it is possible to understand the modern concept of monogamy.

It is quite normal for human beings to have a tendency to commit adultery as variety in sexual partners is basically a carnal desire in human beings. However it proves to be healthier, and better to work at maintaining a monogamous and happy relationship. There needs lots of effort to practice monogamy, but it can be achieved. It is natural for the human mind, if not the body, to roam and fantasize about a colleague or a person met in the elevator. However, instead of actually having a sexual relationship, it proves to be better to close your eyes to envision having sex with the person.

To make sex more interesting with your life partners, you can also make love with them while making believe that he or she is your favorite movie star or rock star. Fantasizing is normal, where you can create whole, romantic and sexual worlds to explore where there is nothing stopping you. This is safer, and a better bet at upholding monogamy, and faithfulness to the partner.

Many couples practice monogamy at one point or the other in their lives and remain sexually monogamous during the relationship. However, different cultures spell varying amounts of monogamy; but whatever the case, it is usually the female that practices monogamy in a relationship.
