How to Write a Love Letter |
One thing that can make or break a relationship even before it starts is how you declare your love. Writing a love-letter is an art. There are innumerable things that can go wrong in it but it still remains one of the best ways to sweep your loved one off their feet.
If you have a way with words, only then should you attempt to propose with a love letter. Otherwise save the romantic letter writing for later, when your relationship has established firm footing. The following guidelines must be taken into consideration while writing a love letter:
1) Make sure your sweetheart is of the romantic type. Love letters are the epitome of romance. Unless your lover is the kind to be swept away by mush, don’t attempt this. You don’t want your feelings to be made fun of.
2) Use correct English or whatever language you are writing in. Expressing your love in broken and flawed language will not work to your advantage. Write in the language you are comfortable with. If you are no great writer, ask a friend for help. Incorrect grammar and spellings can cause you a lot of humiliation. Also, it may totally alter the meaning of what you had intended to write.
3) Be original. Especially if the addressee is an avid reader or a die-hard romantic. They will probably be familiar with the more common works of romance. Blatant copying and plagiarism never works. Your own thoughts and words will be cherished, no matter how modest the attempt. Remember, what eventually matters is feelings.
4) Avoid clichés. Sweet nothings are okay, but don’t use dialogues from movie scripts. It’ll make the whole thing look unreal.
5) Make sure the letter brings to light the careful attention you have paid to that person. Quote things they might have said. Include dates when something you might have shared something special. The best form of flattery is to remember things.
6) Don’t ever bad-mouth others. Not even your own or the other person’s ex. This is supposed to be a love letter, not a hate letter.
7) Mention how the two of you could be so happy together if things work out between you in case the letter carries a proposal. Write about all the things you have dreamed of for the two of you.
8) Indicate that you have spent a lot of time in thought before writing this letter. An impulsive action, no matter how sweet, will always be appreciated less.
9) Don’t make the letter too long or too complicated. It’ll make reading it a task.
10) Write neatly. If you have a bad handwriting, type the letter, though that takes the personal effect away.
11) Lastly, if you want to perfume the letter, make sure you don’t spray it directly onto the paper. It will smudge the words. Spray the perfume on a piece of cloth and fold it over the letter.
Happy writing!
