How to handle money in love relationships |
1) Decide who pays the monthly bills. Chalk out a plan about exactly who pays for what. Even if expenses are split evenly, any confusion could start a heated argument.
2) Keep separate accounts. Combining accounts is a mistake that couples newly married or in love make often. It's disastrous because it leads to more fights.
3) Decide if borrowing money is fine. One or the other partner might run out of the money at the end of the month, so having a clear borrowing policy in place helps. Many people aren't comfortable giving money to their partner and loans feel impersonal. Discuss your feelings about this before the situation comes up.
4) Talk about your philosphy regarding money before you move in together. Are you a saver or a spender? Does shopping and spending money make you 'feel' better? Are you living together to 'save money' on expenses? Does one person earn a lot more money than the other person and how does that feel?
