Decent and Indecent Ways to Dump a Guy |
Here are seven ways to tell him that it's over without too much fuss or heartburn...
So you know that it's over, but you haven't told him yet. Do yourself a favor and get it over with. There's no point playing 'girlfriend' if your heart is in the wrong place. So how do you break up nicely? Here goes...
MEET HIM
Don't break the news to him over the phone. Not only is it rude but he's always going to wonder about what went wrong. Give him a chance to hear it from you directly. E-mail or SMS is even worse. Invite him home or go for a walk together. Either way, sit him down and explain how you feel. Be honest!
ANSWER WHY?
Most men are intelligent. He'll want some kind of an explanation. Don't just say "It's off" and walk away. This was the guy you fell in love with. So be kind to him and explain why things didn't work out for you. You do owe him some kind of explanation, especially if you've been together for a while.
BLAME YOURSELF
It's easier and kinder to blame yourself for the break. You could simply say "It's me. I'm just not ready for somebody as nice as you" or something to that effect. Don't, in any situation, try to place all the blame on him or you'll soon be having a fight rather than a conversation.
LET HIM THINK
Once you've told him, don't expect an answer immediately. If he's in love with you, this will probably be breaking his heart. So respect that and let him be. Don't shower him with questions or "I'm so sorry" statements. He will need a few minutes to let it sink in. Give him that time to think about what's happening to him.
LET HIM TALK
And oh, he may want to explain things, especially if he did something wrong. Hear him out but don't have that "Oh, I wish I had known" look on your face. If your mind is really made up, then let him know that this is the end of the road. Avoid getting trapped again. A firm yet gentle 'no' is best for both of you.
JUST FRIENDS?
That's great if he wants it that way. But make sure you tell him how you want to keep the relationship. If a clean break is what you want, be clear that he understands that. If you want to go on as friends, but he doesn't, then respect that and move on. Don't sob uncontrollably on his shoulder as you're the one breaking up with him... Remember?
DON'T HOLD ON
Let him go. If he wants to leave, then let him. Don't keep pulling him back into conversation. He probably just needs a good drink and some sleep!

And Now For The Indecent Ways!
All those niceties are dandy.. but when you really want to get down and dirty, going the indecent way is more fun than being a nice girl! Here are ways to not be nice when breaking up...
I Love You... Not: Heard of the singing telegram? Enlist the services of one and send him a singation of a romantic song that you two considered 'yours'. Finish it up with flair by adding a personalised message, "I love you, no more... And yes it's not me, it's you! He'll get the message - LOUD and clear.
Seeing is Believing: Know of a big shindig being thrown by a common friend where you know your former object of affection and all your near and dear ones will be in attendance? Go all out... Get a manicure and pedicure, do your hair, take out that little red number and show up on the arm of a colleague of his that he was always jealous of or the cricket star of his rival college team. Actions speak louder than words, baby!
Much Ado About Nothing: Remember that one annoying habit of yours that he always hated, like your messy behavior or a food allergy he made a big fuss about? Well, get innovative. Hates the smell of fish, does he? Sneak into his apartment or var and leave a parcel of smelly, dead fish with a (ahem!) thoughtfully worded note saying, "You stink." Ouch!
Revenge Is Sweet: Finally remember that age-old idiom: Don't get mad, get even. Taking cues from chick flicks like Mean Girls and John Tucker Must Die, hit him where it hurts.
It could be anything from blowing his cover to pals with sneaky recordings of him badmouthing them. Or using a hot pal of yours he always had a crush on as bait to get him into a very compromising position. You won't need much else!
