Public Display of Affection

Contradictory character of the society is revealed truly from the fact while the legends of love duos like Laila-Majnu, Shiri-Farhad, or Heer-Ranjha has been adored by millions, love between two young hearts continues to face disapproval. In India, movies and electronic media are full of super love stories and yet when it comes to real life such love is considered contrary to traditions and customs. Indian culture and heritage does not approve public display of love and affection. It can make the viewer really uncomfortable. Yet it could really be a matter of choice for the couples concerned. Generation gap has also come into play in this respect. While the younger generation may be quite at ease with such acts, society at large is yet to accept such actions. Of course the time is changing and a couple holding hand today does not bring up a second glance. Yet a line needs to be drawn between decency and vulgarity. Hugging and kissing in the public is still not the ways that our culture would accept. A couple of unwarranted social implications would be tarnished reputation and embarrassment for families of the couples involved.

One may wonder at the motivations that make people display intimacies in public. It could be a simple show off or reassurance about the dedication to the lover. More practical reasons could be lack of places to have some exotic intimate moments.

Question is whether such public show of affection is really wrong. Despite the fact that the couple concerned may be truly devoted to each other, right or wrong has always been decided by the society at large and not by individuals. Show of affection is a private expression and flaunting type of love is unwarranted in our social customs and heritage.

A word of advice for all young couples venturing out to make their affections public show is that they should refrain from such activities as far as practicable. It could result in social embarrassment and in view of the current legislations, legal trouble as well. Add to this the bad names earned by the family concerned and it becomes one of the most unwarranted acts.
