“Everything went from wrong to right and stars came out and filled up the sky… it was love at first sight….” These lyrics are something most eternal romantics will vouch for. Is it true that you can always tell at first glance that THIS is the right person for you? Does love require time and understanding or is it possible to fall in love in one fateful moment? If you are a romantic movie buff then it is likely that you do believe in the concept of love at first sight. On the other hand, if you are a practical, not-so-mushy person, you would probably think of this as an archaic, unworldly concept.
Love means a deep emotional attachment to someone. Can you be attached to someone without knowing anything about them? There is little you could guess about a person in one glance. Infact, apart from finding out what that person looks like you may not get to know anything at all! But doesn’t that imply that one could fall for a person just on the basis of their looks?? Even the most unromantic of people will not believe that. Looks might be initial reason of your attraction towards a person, but a person with little to offer except good looks cannot really be “loved”.
What is it that people fall in love with? Personality and nature are the most common answers to that question. Both cannot be known at first sight. You may guess what a person is like, but the probability of being right about everything is one in a million! It is commonly and quite correctly said that looks can be deceiving. But then, if it is impossible, why do people believe in love at first sight at all? Maybe it is because a good looking person would be more noticeable and so there is a higher chance of you trying to talk to that person and getting to know them. So, relatively there is a greater chance of falling in love with a good looking person as compared to a plain one.
So why do people imagine themselves to be in love with a person they know next to nothing about? When we come across an attractive individual of the opposite sex, there is a surge of hormones in our body. These include sex hormones, endorphins and other hormones in the brain that create an illusion referred to as love. Endorphins stimulate the brain and cause a feeling of happiness, which enhances the positive frame of mind. Together these chemicals make a person confuse physical attraction with love.
Also, somewhere deep inside, everyone dreams of a perfect fairytale love story where love exists without doubt or conditions. We dream of meeting the perfect person and knowing instantly that this is the one. We mistake our fantasies for the real thing and that is what love at first sight is – a mere fantasy…
